The 2025 Cultural Mediation Forum brings literature and its profoundly transformative role in individual and community life to the forefront. From the perspectives of writers who combine creation with education, to the programs of organizations dedicated to promoting reading and literacy development, to the library as a space for community building, the Forum approaches reading not only as an individual act of understanding the world, but also as a means of opening up to others.
The Forum aims to explore the role of literature as a resource for cultural and intercultural mediation, and reading and related practices of encountering written culture as acts of personal and collective emancipation. In the current context, marked by social fragmentation and unequal access to culture, spaces dedicated to reading remain a democratic and accessible meeting place for people, ideas, and realities—a means by which culture and education connect with the community.
The program includes presentations, discussions, and training workshops dedicated to cultural mediation professionals who work with literature, text, and reading, along with book presentations and interactive working sessions. We will discuss the community role of libraries, the relationship between writers and schools and young audiences, and the cultural openness generated by museum programs and discourses dedicated to books. We will highlight the capacity of educational initiatives, especially those based on the active participation of beneficiaries, to create broader access to written culture and a deeper relationship with it.
The forum highlights the potential of these cultural mediation practices to facilitate more equitable access to written culture and to build a deep and empowering relationship between the individual, the community, and literature.

Words give meaning to reality, and readers and writers constantly mediate between the inner and outer worlds. Through the books we share and the reading habits we share, we build and deconstruct a collective imagination that lays the foundations for community. New creations, which involve young readers in identifying themes for writing and then meeting authors, as well as museums that take on the role of cultural and intercultural mediators about writers and literature, inspire new practices for democratizing and promoting written culture and reading.

Framework

Saturday, October 11th 2025
10.00-12.00
Libraries represent the most numerous and accessible cultural infrastructure in Romania, and the role of this institution has evolved rapidly over the last 35 years, through many projects, programs, and grassroots efforts. The work of librarians covers a wide range of roles, depending on the personality of the place, but one of the roles that has received almost unanimous recognition in recent years is that of contributing to the creation and consolidation of communities around a democratic and inclusive public service.

What resources are needed to promote reading and literature? And to activate the role of libraries in building communities around written culture? We shed light on several formats for collective and creative interpretation of literature, recommendations for building and designing libraries, proposals for skills training to develop literacy skills, and engaging museum talks about writers and literature.

Competences

Saturday, October 11th 2025
15.00-17.30
The skills needed to promote the role of reading, creative writing, and libraries in rural areas are not obvious and, for this reason, are often overlooked by those who make public policy decisions. Can the skills of those who drive education and culture at the grassroots level be matched with the responsibility to understand and take appropriate action by those with decision-making power at the societal level?
