The Cluj Cultural Center in partnership with Universcience – Paris is organizing a scientific mediation course during the Romania – France 2019 season. The course aims to develop practical skills in communicating science to a wide audience.

The course will take place between 14 and 15 May 2019 in Cluj-Napoca and is aimed at 15 participants. Conducted by Catherine OUALIAN, French specialist in the field of scientific communication, the course will be held in English.

The workshop will focus on developing practical skills in:

event moderation and co-creation with various actors

development of information activities

building presentation techniques and “staging” a topic to different audiences

The course is aimed at:

young professionals from various scientific fields (elementary sciences, social sciences, etc.)

students, scientific researchers, PhD students, journalists, experts, practitioners in different scientific fields

to people who are passionate about science and who are interested in communicating scientific information and knowledge to a wide audience, especially young audiences

Specific requirements:

minimum age: 20 years

fluent English (understanding and speaking)

availability to participate in both days of the course (14 – 15 May 2019)

availability to participate as a facilitator in an event organized between June 22 and 23 in Cluj-Napoca and which aims to bring science closer to the people of Cluj. This requirement is not an eliminative criterion.

How can science be introduced to the general public? Why is one method or another chosen for scientific communication? How can scientific information attract and maintain public attention? The Science Mediation Training Workshop aims to answer these questions and prepare participants to design a science mediation program for the general public.

Registrations are made by May 8 by filling out the form. Participation is free, and the 15 participants will be selected based on the submitted documentation.

The aim of the course is to prepare participants to design and facilitate activities to familiarize the general public with science and specific topics that are approached from a scientific point of view.

About the trainer
Catherine Oualian este trainer certificat al Școlii de mediere din cadrul Universcience (Paris, Franța).

Catherine Oualian is a certified trainer of the Mediation School of Universcience (Paris, France).

After a PhD in neuroscience and a training period in project science communication management, Catherine Oualian worked as a science mediator. He was then project manager and then director of a science communication association focused on social inclusion and public engagement. Catherine Oualian then joined the training center “Ecole de la média” where she coordinates and conducts training courses for scientific mediators.

About the course & organizers

The course is part of the project “Towards a participatory approach of the local public: mutualization of knowledge in scientific mediation”, organized within the Romania-France 2019 season.

Course participants will be encouraged to maintain a long-term collaborative interest in the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) education and promotion projects that the Cluj Cultural Center will organize in the coming period.

The training course is organized by the Cluj Cultural Center, as part of the Change Academy program, with the support of the Cluj-Napoca City Hall and the Cluj County Council. Partners: Banca Transilvania and URSUS.
