The sixth edition of the Cultural Mediation Forum addresses the theme of nature as a medium and subject of cultural mediation and connected fields: pedagogy, education, science communication.

How do culture and nature meet in mediation? What alternative models of ecological education and complex understanding of the world exist? How do art and science collaborate to explore the natural environment? And how are they working together to develop soft skills? What organic ways of integrating art and science into sustainable practices inspire us? How do artists, scientists, educators and mediators develop an understanding and a living awareness of the importance of the natural environment among young people and adults?

Observing and interacting with nature challenges us to discover the world and the deep connections between humans and all that is non-human. We develop empathy and prepare for a future where sustainability and responsibility are essential.

The climate crisis is the burning issue of our times. More and more events, institutions and cultural spaces cultivate critical thinking and offer formats for dialog and learning about the topic. What cultural mediation strategies increase civic awareness about the role of individuals and communities in the face of climate change?

Learning from nature is carried out through interactive methods and care for the environment that contribute to a balanced society. Through partnerships, events and tailored cultural and educational spaces we look at ecology as a subject as well as an operating and design principle.

What kind of world are we handing down to future generations? Ecology and sustainability matter because we are concerned about the future, we are mindful of resources and the human relationship with the natural environment, and education is the essential ground where we start to act in this direction. How can art and culture be a good mediator for these topics?

Nature is fertile ground for experimenting with new mediation practices, and different perspectives naturally come together and draw on this vitality and inspirational power when they are engaged with nature. During the Forum we will navigate through mediation practices that come from education or culture, from science and art, from theory and action, through the experience and good practice examples illustrated by mediators, educators, scientists and artists.

Definitions

What do we learn from nature?
Tuesday, 29th October
13.00-15.00
Facebook live
The theme of nature creates natural opportunities for art and culture to intersect with other fields such as science, heritage and education. Nature-centered or nature-inspired learning opens up topics that go beyond the obvious layers - from ecology, sustainability and climate crisis to empathy, care or ethics.

Framework

How does nature find its place in cultural and community contexts?
Tuesday, 29th October
15.30-17.30
Themes such as sustainability, ecology and understanding the natural environment are frequently addressed in cultural and educational programs. This session is dedicated to examples of spaces and initiatives whose identity is built around these concerns.

Resources

What good practices guide us to connect with the surrounding world?
Wednesday, October 30th
14.00-16.00
We learn when we think and process emotions, but the gateway can be through sound, touch or taste, not just sight and hearing. Nature teaches us that flexibility and the constant search for resources are the keys to survival and development, and for the arts, cultural mediation is a form of exploring new senses and a different way of learning.

Competences

What do those who mediate nature through science or art know and don't know?
Wednesday, October 30th
16.30-18.30
Those of us who were good at biology at school often remember the many strange names and processes by which the living world has amazed and fascinated us. The world of art also often impresses us with the way trends and tendencies are conceptualized, how some works and artists are recognized as valuable.

Workshop

with REPER21 Association

Appreciation and reciprocity: how can relationships and community define well-being?
Tuesday, October 29th
10:00-12:00
The workshop offers cultural mediators the opportunity to develop a new perspective on the concept of well-being, born out of the Western cultural matrix and nowadays disseminated on a global scale. Participants will be places in a context to perceive, analyze and renegotiate the values and principles of our Western well-being from an outsider’s point of view – that of “Buen Vivir”, a concept that originated in the cultural matrix of pre-Columbian communities and has spread to the national societies of Latin America.
Registrations for this workshop are closed.

Workshop & guided tour

with Marius Mornea

LOC - Central Park
Wednesday, October 30th

Central Park, Cluj
The Central Park is the second chapter of the augmented reality application LOC. Through it, visitors to the park can immerse themselves in a series of interactive installations that explore less known elements of the biodiversity of this popular and loved location. We will experience LOC in a guided tour and an interactive experience with Marius Mornea, part of the team which developed the platform. The session will explore ways in which we are entangled in the world and will guide us into a discussion on our connections with nature.
